Ida has been one of the most awarded films of 2014, including the BFI London Film Festival and the European Film Award as best picture.

The film takes place in Poland during the 60’s; the injuries of the World War II are closing and the communist party controls the country. Anna is a young novice who wants to become a nun, but her prioress asks her to visit her family before taking the vows. The only living relative is her aunt Wanda, who works for the government as a judge.

They are two opposed kind of people: Anna is a religious and ascetic woman and Wanda works for the communist regime, drinks and lives a liberal life. They have very different ways to see the things, but that is not the central topic of the film.

The real story begins when Wanda reveals that Anna’s parents were Jewish and her real name is Ida. Then, she needs to visit their grave places and get in touch with her past.

It allows the audience to feel immersed in the story and, above all, creates visual parameters around the characters, whose emotions are highlighted in a beautiful way

The two main actresses, Agata Trzebuchowska and Agata Kulesza, made very good performances and they have been recognized with several awards' nominations.

This is a non-commercial movie, but it has been well-received by the public all along Europe. Did you watch it at the cinema?
